Prometheus by Gabz

Big things have small beginnings” – David

Grey Matter Art is excited to announce it’s next release! In partnership with Acme Archives and Dark Ink, under license from 20th Century Fox, GMA will be revealing a new screen print for the film, “Prometheus” by the very talented artist, Gabz (Grzegorz Domaradzki). We have always been huge fans of the Alien franchise, director, Ridley Scott, and H.R. Giger, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with how this print came out. “Prometheus” comes in 2 separate editions, a regular & variant edition. Below are details regarding the poster and release information.

This is Gabz’s artist statement regarding “Prometheus”:

I’ve been a fan of Alien franchise since the very beginning and always enjoyed terrifying yet mesmerising worlds created by Sir Ridley Scott, so I couldn’t be happier for having a chance to work on an officially licensed print for Prometheus. The idea for this poster struck me after re-watching it for the third time and I almost instantly started drawing… For me it was a sort of back to basics, because the image was entirely made with pencils on paper, later scanned and digitally enhanced in Adobe Photoshop, and later color separated for screen printing. I’m pleased to say it’s practically a personal work and really wanted to thank Grey Matter Art guys, Acme Archives Limited and Dark Ink Art for letting me do this piece my way. The idea was to depict Architect’s pale and godly profile with a human fetus inside his skull. Attentive viewer should be able to spot at least few references to xenomprph and H.R. Giger’s work that inspired “worlds scariest alien”. The title is “Creator of Men” or simply “Architect” and my intention was to yet again pay homage to Polish Poster School which is very close to my heart not just because of my origin. With this print I also wanted to somehow recollect my earlier years, back when I was an art student and was absolutely obsessed with anatomy and human body in general. Hope fans of the franchise will appreciate my take on the film.

This Poster will be released on Wednesday, March 22nd at 1:00 PM EST at greymatterart.com

Gabz Fires Up The Repulsors!

Grey Matter Art, Marvel and Gabz strap on their repulsors and team up to bring us “IRON MAN“! This is Grey Matter Art’s second time working with the Armored Avenger and they couldn’t have picked a more talented illustrator to represent Tony Stark’s alter-ego than Gabz! This print looks amazing and the foil variant is the stuff of dreams! Kudos to all involved!

Here’s what Grey Matter Art had to say about Iron Man…”Grey Matter Art, under license from Marvel Studios, is proud to present a New Officially Licensed, Limited-Edition Screen Print for the Classic Super-Hero Action Film, “Iron Man.” This is the second poster Grey Matter Art has produced for “Iron Man” and has chosen to work with the very talented artist, Grzegorz Domaradzki (Gabz). There are 3 separate editions for this poster, a Regular & Variant Edition, as well as a Gold Foil Edition. The subtle use of gold foil is used very selectively and really lends itself well to this poster.

Gabz himself chimed in regarding the project…”When growing up I was a huge comic book fan, reading everything comics related I could get my hands on (which, in Eastern Europe wasn’t as easy as one might think). I used to copy my favourite artists and draw my own stories. Back in the day working for comic giant such as Marvel seemed like an impossible dream, so as soon as I heard the GMA guys are getting the license for Marvel films, I had a number of titles I wanted to tackle. I was thrilled and excited to work on Jon Favreau’s: Iron Man, by far my favourite and best Marvel film (next to The Guardians of the Galaxy). I enjoy it greatly every time I see it. I wanted the composition to reflect the conflict between good and evil by dividing the canvas into two parts. Since I was always drawn towards villains in those type of movies I decided to build the composition around Obadiah’s sinister headshot (one cannot really dislike The Dude). It wouldn’t be a complete Iron Man poster without Tony Stark, Pepper Potts and Iron Man’s classic pose. I hope the fans of the movie will appreciate it. I know for sure I had a blast doing it and I’m very happy with cleverly used foil this time around.

Grey Matter and Gabz Love Power Tools

The gang at Grey Matter Art have enlisted illustrator Gabz to create another stunning print in Grey Matter’s “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” poster anthology! I love the use of typography in this one, and as always, Gabz illustrations are second-to-none.

Here’s a little more info from the guys at Grey Matter..”Grey Matter Art is proud to announce our next release for the 4 part artist series for the 40th Anniversary of the film, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” Our next poster is by the very talented Grzegorz Domaradzki (Gabz). This is our sixth project collaboration with Gabz, and we are so excited with his idea for the film, and think it works very well as a companion piece to our other Texas Chainsaw Massacre posters in this series.

Gabz also chimed in on his involvement with this illustration…”Being a huge fan of what Jason Edmiston and Florian Bertmer did for the same title before me, as hard is it was, I wanted my piece to be something completely different. I’ve been wanting to work on something more editorial-looking for months, and with a title as long as this one, I felt it’s a perfect opportunity not to be wasted.

Since viewers of this classic horror flick are meant to believe it’s based on a true story, custom-designed typo that looks like a front page of some crazy newspaper seemed like a right thing to do.Instead of focusing on just one scene or character, I included several plot points and all the essential characters destined (or not) to end up on Sawyer’s dining table.

“The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” poster by Gabz is available now at Grey Matter’s Webstore.

Gabz had this to say about First Blood

I love working on titles that had an impact on me back when I was growing up. First Blood (and the Rambo character in general) are definitely among them. I still remember how this great piece of cinema moved me back when I saw it for the first time.
No doubt it was and remains one of the saddest movies from the 80’s. Both me and GMA guys wanted to capture some of that sadness on this image while at the same time keeping it very iconic… almost monumental.

Personally I’m very happy with the outcome. Consider this my final take on one of my biggest “old time heroes”: Sylvester Stallone. Hope I gave you justice John J…

In addition to Gabz’s comments, Grey Matter Art partner Mike Gregory added…

First Blood was one of my favorite movies growing up. I loved all of those 80’s films, but there were always certain ones that always stood out to me that I would watch over and over again, and this was one of them. Yes, the movie had some great action scenes, but I always thought it was such a sad film. Sylvester played this role of an outcast and an unwanted man when he came back form the war so well. You rooted for him until the last minute. And you can’t forget about the music for this movie too. The film’s score was composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith, and played so well to the film. This poster by Gabz depicts Rambo as that lonely man, and I am glad he chose to take it this way, instead of the “epic” action movie poster feel that most people think of when they envision the movie. I couldn’t have asked for a better turn out from Gabz than this one.

Another awesome piece from Gabz and another exciting release from Grey Matter Art! Keep it up, guys!

Knives and Stabbing Weapons

Sometimes you just want an indestructible cyborg killing machine to protect you from a futuristic liquid metal robot bent on changing the future by murdering you in the present. Other times you want to blast Guns N’ Roses while riding on the back of a scooter, driven by your red-headed, mullet-wearing best friend. Whichever suits…

“When you’re an 80’s kid like myself you just had to see and fall in love with Top Gun. Sure it has that testosterone/macho vibe that used to be so popular back in those days. Call me nostalgic, but I consider it a classic action flick, with brilliant aerial sequences, cool characters and an awesome soundtrack. When approached by Odd City for this print I knew I wanted something horizontal this time around. I decided a jet fighter battle recollecting the Cold War era should really work well with this title. I also wanted to step back from the complex multi-character based compositions with this one, and to design the print in a way so it could be viewed upside down as well.”GABZ

Grey Matter Art and The Artist Currently Known as Gabz take it all the waaaaay back to 1984! Can you believe that shizz? Miles Bennett Dyson would be so proud…if he wasn’t dead and all. Grey Matter’s Mike Gregory has some things to say about Cyberdyne Systems Model 101. “So we have a new poster, and it is for our biggest license to date, we are proud to announce our next poster for “The Terminator” and “Terminator 2: Judgement Day” by artist Grzegorz Domaradzki (Gabz). This will be a 2 part series, with the first poster to be released December 16th, and the next to be released the following month. This poster will be a diptych and go together as one big epic piece. Please enjoy the first glimpse at Gabz’s amazing work. Hope you guys like it.

Doing this project meant a lot to both Jared and I the moment we were able to acquire the rights to do a poster for both Terminator films. We have always been such big fans of this Franchise, and to have the opportunity to do a poster for both movies, was an honor. This is our 3rd poster collaboration to release with artist Gabz, and we really work so well together. He seems to know exactly what us and other poster collectors are looking for, and delivers every time. I think Gabz depicted this movie very well, and finally gave us the epic Terminator poster we have been waiting for. We hope everyone enjoys it as much as we had making it.”

While going door-to-door, looking for Sarah Connor and blowing punk-ass bitches away, we managed to get this quote from Gabz himself: “The Terminator” and “Terminator 2: Judgement Day” are both one of those movies I always wanted to work on, so when Mike Gregory from Grey Matter Art approached me with the offer, it was like a dream come true. I wanted something with strong imagery, action packed, and with a glimpse of the future as seen in both movies. While I’m hoping the artworks will speak for themselves, two things worth pointing out is that the general concept was inspired by an interview with James Cameron I read a while back, in which he stated that he had a dream about a cyborg/robot coming out of the flames, and as we all know the rest is pretty much a cinema history. The other thing I wanted, was to design both posters to form a diptych.”

Here’s what Gabz had to say about the experience of illustrating “Mulholland Drive”:

“Being a long time fan of David Lynch so I was more than happy to deliver a first ever authorized poster print for one of my favorite movies of all time, “Mulholland Drive”. This hypnotic, dream-like and surrealistic film with brilliant music and top-notch acting made a huge impact on me back when I was an art student, and I keep coming back to it with great pleasure, discovering something new every time.

There are many unforgettable scenes which I was tempted to focus on when designing this poster and even more hard-to-forget characters I felt I needed to include, but after creating a series of different mock ups, I decided to focus on one character in particular that I personally find most disturbing and interesting. My intention was to design a poster that, when viewed from the distance, portrays a faceless and mysterious Cowboy, and only after looking from up close reveals other essential characters to the story such as Betty, Rita, Adam Kesher, Coco and more.

Last but not least, with this print I wanted to pay a homage to one of the Polish Poster School masters Waldemar Świerzy and his unbelievably beautiful poster for Midnight Cowboy.”

Be sure to hit up Grey Matter Art next Tuesday for your shot at owning one of these awesome posters!

Grey Matter Art and Gabz Present…ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK!

On Wednesday, April 30th, 2014, our friends at Grey Matter Art will be releasing a print based on John Carpenter’s classic “Escape From New York“. Illustrated by Grzegorz Domaradzki aka Gabz, the print will be released in a Regular and Variant edition.

Escape from New York Regular Edition by Gabz

Escape from New York Regular Edition by Gabz. Edition of 325. Printed by D&L Screen Printing. $50.00

We think the print rocks and here’s the official word on it from the folks at Grey Matter and Gabz himself:

Grey Matter Art and StudioCanal present a New Limited Edition, Screen Print by artist, Grzegorz Domaradzki (Gabz) for the iconic film “Escape From New York”. This will be the first official poster for the John Carpenter classic released in 1981, featuring Kurt Russell as hero Snake Plissken. Also, this will be Grey Matter Art’s second offering and first collaboration with Gabz, who said this about the project, “When Mike Gregory, co-founder of Grey Matter Art offered me an opportunity to work on John Carpenter’s ‘Escape from New York’ I didn’t hesitate much. My main intention was to deliver something a little bit different from what I’ve been known for until now… something less character based, more focused on the movie’s atmosphere, and true to the original poster artwork. Being a fan of the original and iconic poster, my print also has post-apocalyptic streets of New York City, gang members, and the majestic Statue of Liberty (or what was left from it) dominating the skyline. Except Snake Plissken, in my version is all by himself: tired, hurt, on the run, and fighting against all odds. Perceptive viewers should also notice Snake’s plane crossing the red walls of the New York City prison, and the bottom grid which is intended to be a tribute to visual effects used in the movie.

Escape from New York Variant Edition by Gabz

Escape from New York Variant Edition by Gabz. Edition of 175. Printed by D&L Screen Printing. $75.00

Creative Director Mike Gregory also had this to add “When we had the chance to obtain the rights to ‘Escape from New York’ I was very excited and honored to have a shot at it. This movie, in my eyes is a true 80’s classic, which still holds up to this day. Snake is such an iconic character, and I wanted to have this movie presented in a way that does it justice. Being this is the first authorized art poster based on the film, there was only one artist in my eyes that I wanted to take on this project, and that was Grzegorz Domaradzki (Gabz). Though most collectors are probably used to his multiple character compositions, I think he did a great job that separates this from his other work, focusing mainly on Snake, when he is injured, and at his lowest. Gabz depicted this perfectly, and we are very proud to have such a great poster to release to the public. People have been waiting for this movie to have an official poster for it, and I think this is the one.

Posters will go on sale Wednesday, April 30th at a random time between 1:00-2:00 PM. EST on our website’s shop page.!

Wait for the tweet to be notified on when this poster will drop!
